- to release the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which play an important role in reproduction
What is Ovarian cysts
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside the ovaries. They are common and usually harmless. In most cases, cysts don’t cause any symptoms and disappear without treatment within a few months. Often, they are only found during a routine pelvic examination. Ovarian cysts may affect both ovaries at the same time, or only 1.

Treatment Options for Ovarian Cysts
An ovarian cyst typically does not need to be treated. Instead, it will go away on its own. Your doctor will decide how to treat an ovarian cyst based on:
- its size and appearance
- whether you have been through the menopause
- if there is a chance it may be cancer
Watchful waiting: Though most cysts disappear on their own after about a few months, you may want to ask your doctor for another ultrasound to see if the cyst is gone.
Test and Medication: Your healthcare provider may prescribe birth control pills to stop ovulation and prevent future cysts from forming. If you are experiencing menopause, there is a slightly higher risk of ovarian cancer. Regular ultrasound scans and blood tests are usually recommended over the course of a year to monitor the cyst.
Surgery : Your doctor may recommend you see a surgeon if your cysts are large, causing symptoms or potentially cancerous.. In some cases, docotor may suggest you to go for surgery to remove both your ovaries, in that case you'll no longer produce any eggs.
Ovarian cysts do not usually prevent you getting pregnant, although they can sometimes make it harder to conceive. If you experience any of the above symptoms, it is always recommended to consult a gynecologist.
