Most women get their periods every 28 days, but the length of time between periods can vary from 21 to 35 days. Periods usually last between 3 and 8 days. Anything outside of this range should be considered irregular.
Irregular periods can be a sign of problems, but they are usually not harmful to your health. Long-term irregularity in a woman's period may mean that she is at risk for other conditions, including infertility, which, pregnancy complications, endometriosis cancer and endometrial etc.
Causes of Irregular periods are:
PCOS: Women with PCOS usually have infrequent periods and often produce too much male hormone, which causes cysts to form in their ovaries.
Stress: Too much stress can throw off your menstrual cycle. It's important to relax and find ways to cope with stress.
Unhealthy lifestyle: If you are overweight, your hormone and insulin levels may be disrupted, which could affect your menstruation cycle. And if you have a very low body weight, it can also affect your periods and make it harder to get pregnant.
Illness: Some health conditions are linked with hormone imbalance, which can cause irregular periods. A few of these include STDs, endometriosis, eating disorders, fibroids, and so on.
Birth Control : Birth control pills can affect your period by controlling the levels of hormones in your system. They can make your period irregular, lighter or even more frequent than normal.
A couple of periods a year are nothing to worry about. But if you have them more often, you should see a doctor to be sure that it dont affect your life.
